Best metal albums 2012 #15-11

Preview: We All Rage In Gold

My journey with Neurosis saw daylight back in 2007 with their previous album, Given To The Rising. The hardcore fans probably are sharpening their knives already and picking stones to throw at me, but this is the truth. Later I have been doing my homework to familiarize their previous works only to find out that this band is huge and a force to be reckoned with. Their style could be described somewhere between Sludge and Post-Hardcore. The songs are long, tempo changing and they really challenge the listener. As the line-up have matured, so has the music. You have to reserve time and clear your mind until you can fully grasp their full potential. When that happens, you will be rewarded.

Preview: Carolus Rex

On the paper Sabaton's concept seems utterly ridiculous: a young Swedish band is singing about wars e.g. in Poland, Sweden and Finland having a vocalist with harsh German accent. The overall sound is up-tempo and the choruses are immediately hooking and will be imprinted in your brains for days. Sounds a bit too cheesy and poppy? It all changes when you attend one of their shows and witness the loudest crowd you've ever seen in a metal gig. Most probably during the first three songs you will have goose bumps and will be jumping up and down relentlessly singing your heart out together with the rest of the posse. Yup, you got it right: they have the talent to make you feel entertained, united, relaxed, wanted and loud. Now if that isn't metal, I don't know what is. On a side note, Carolus Rex is one of catchiest song I heard in 2012.

Preview: Descent Into Chaotic Dream

Funeral doom is a pretty tough art to master, but Evoken is doing it right. Their fifth full length, Atra Mors, has been five years in the making and doesn't fail. The sound is haunting, massive, depressive, melodic and slow-paced. The album has eight opuses and they follow a good pattern: two epic songs, one interlude, two epic songs, one interlude and finally another two epic songs. The album clocks over 67 minutes, so if you're looking for a training mix tape to burn those extra calories, Atra Mors is a good choice: you will suffer, your pain will grow but in the end you realize the fun is over and want to do that all again.

Preview: Cathedral Walls

Swallow The Sun is one my favourite Finnish bands, so when I heard about this new release my expectations were running sky-high. The single Cathedral Walls (and the absolutely stunning video) lifted them even more and I was more than anxious to press play when I finally got the CD on my hands. After a few spins, I was kind of disappointed: the album was all I expected, but the vow factor was missing. I later witnessed several live performances by them and that reinforced the image. Don't get me wrong: everything worked, but somehow I felt it was all too premeditated,  and didn't surprise me. After a few months, I decided to listen to the album again and then it finally happened: my mind exploded enough to appreciate and understand the song writing and how their sound has evolved. The album is still a rat salad in a way: you have death doom songs, gothic songs and melodic doom songs. That all sounds a bit too  shattered, but the package stays together after all and with songs like Hate, Lead The Way!, Hearts Wide Shut, Of Death And Corruption and Labyrinth Of London they make my TOP15 with flying colours.

Preview: Dojana

One could say that currently Romania is not very popular metal country, however I am pretty sure it is about to change very soon. Most underground listeners know Negură Bunget and now Dordeduh. It was back in 2009 after a disagreement when Hupogrammos and Sol Faur decided to leave Negură Bunget. I read somewhere there was some bad blood with the split and the fans were divided somewhat to two groups: Negură Bunget fans and Dordeduh fans. I try to stay neutral from that fight and listen to music as it is offered to me. First of all, it is not easy to get into Dordeduh (in English "Longing for spirit"): all the lyrics are in Romanian, the songs are long with a lot of folk elements, tempo changes and shamanic parts. The overall duration of the album is more that 77 minutes, which means Prophecy Productions really gave free hands for Dordeduh to explore their creativity without boundaries. The song writing is exceptional and the musicianship, so even though you cannot sing along to the lyrics, the music possesses you and takes you on a journal to dark woods and white mountains of Timișoara where hungry ravens follow your steps and howling of the wolves makes you question your ability to finish your journey. Give me a few more weeks and this album would be in my TOP10.

Best metal albums 2012 #20 - 16

As promised, I will put down a few words for the albums in my TOP20. Closing in to my TOP10 the picks became more difficult and with extra time I could have easily introduced a different order. No excuses though, I need to get this list down so I cannot second guess it anymore. Here we go!

20. Pallbearer: Sorrow and Extinction
(Doom Metal, USA)

Preview: Foreigner

Pallbearer's debut album is a storm warning for all classic doom lovers. The four piece band hails from Little Rock, Arkansas and has been formed in 2008. Their sound could be compared to Warning as the songs are slow and melodic with less poignant vocals yet solid and emotional vocal delivery from Mr Brett Campbell. The album consists of five epic songs clocking close to 50 minutes where two tracks break the 10 minute mark. The song writing is versatile and the sound is classic 80's doom combining melodic guitars and heavy, distorted bass. The production sounds a bit muddy to my ears, but I have a strong feeling it is done on purpose to salute the classic doom roots. There is really nothing bad I can say about this record, so you should definitely check these guys out.

19. Cattle Decapitation: Monolith Of Inhumanity
(Death Metal / Grindcore, USA)

Preview: A Living, Breathing Piece Of Defecating Meat

This is probably the most metal and ugliest album on my list. I am not going to lie: when I first heard this album, I didn't like it that much. Why? It has all the elements of brilliant Grindcore/Brutal Death metal album: it is fast, it is brutal, the drummer is clearly inhuman, the lyrics are explicit & gross and the vocals are nasty and fierce. So what was my problem? Not knowing their previous works they sounded too brvtal and extreme to be true. So I did my homework and learnt that these guys have been pretty much declaring the message since their 2002 debut album To Serve Man. Their video for Forced Gender Reassignment is the sickest, most disgusting and controversial video I have ever seen. Don't know why I even took the time to watch it, so if you decide to look it up prepare to be shocked big time. Ultimately why they did break my TOP20 was the reason that this year I listened to a lot of grindcore, hardcore and brutal death metal and in comparison to the other material, they pretty much rule this genre.

18. Kretor: Phantom Antichrist
(Thrash Metal, Germany)

Preview: Civilization Collapse

All five of my great 80's thrash icons: Overkill, Tankard, Paradox, Testament and Kreator released brilliant albums in 2012. Only two of them made my TOP40 based on the fact that I wanted to give the possibility for the underground and less known bands. Kreator has been on a winning strike since Sami Yli-Sirniö joined the band in 2001 when they released Violent Revolution. What makes them so great in my book is the stellar song writing they possess. Mille clearly isn't the world's most talented vocalist, but he serves his purpose well. Currently the band is in stellar form: all the band members know their position and do not fail. There is basically not one weak track in the album and my personal highlights are the title track, Death To The World, Civilization Collapse and The Few, The Proud, The Broken. I have seen them live a few times now and each time they deliver. Especially the ending is classy when Mille walks to the stage holding a white flag...yup, it is TIME TO RAISE THE FLAG OF HATE!

17. Eluveitie: Helvetios
(Folk / Melodic Death Metal, Switzerland)

Preview: A Rose For Epona

I have been a sucker for Eluveitie since I first saw them live. I love the way all the folk elements are incorporated into their songs: you have Uilleann pipes, tin and low whistles, fiddle, Hurdy gurdy and bagpipes in addition to the basic metal instruments. Sounds messy? In fact they make it work beautifully and once you get their gear on, you'll be stuck with them for a long time. Helvetios is a concept album and has 17 tracks and a running time of an hour. The growls are handled by a male vocalist Chrigel Glanzmann and the softer, ethereal female vocals by Meri Tadic. There are spoken parts, interludes, slow and fast songs and the package holds together nicely. They have already produced six albums in their 10 year existence, so these guys are productive too. Still I want my Eluveitie to sound awesome in the future, so hopefully they give enough time for their creativity to reach its absolute full potential.

16. Alcest: Les voyages de l'âme

Preview: Les voyages de l'âme

My friend introduced me to Alcest about two years ago. Their previous album, Écailles de lune, had already been released at that time and he urged me to check it out. I did and now I have their entire discography and had the privilege to catch them live twice in 2012. Their sound has evolved from harder black metallish to softer and lighter shoegaze. We could argue whether this album has the right to stand on a metal year-end list, but there are still songs with harsh vocals e.g. Là où naissent les couleurs nouvelles and Faiseurs de mondes so I keep my justification valid. Their sound is evolving and the mastermind Neige has said that probably all the harsh vocals will be gone in the next Alcest record. Les voyages de l'âme is 50 minute journey to your soul where the atmosphere is fragile, light, ethereal and soothing.

January 2012 Surprise Of The Month

The 11th Hour: Lacrima Mortis

Lacrima Mortis is the follow-up for their debut Burden Of Grief released in 2009. The dutch multi instrumentalist Ed Warby is a very ambitious and self-demanding guy, who is well known for his contribution in e.g. Demiurg, Hail Of Bullets, Star One and Ayreon. The 11th Hour is his own project and he has put a lot of work and effort to please us with his music.

When I first heard Ed's crisp and theatrical clean vocals, they didn't connect me on emotional level. His singing technique is stellar, but what left me cold at first was the tone of his voice. However, with repeated listens I found out that the phrasing might be done on purpose to contemplate the growls. The harsh vocals on this album are done by Pim Blankenstein from Officium Triste and he does a great job. On a sidenote: if you are not familiar with Officium Triste before, do yourself a favor and get to know to this great death/doom band.

What you will hear immediately is that the production is very well done: powerful, crisp and heavy. Some might complain it is too sterile, but I wouldn't go there. The guitars, bass and drums sound as they should to my ear for a doom metal record. The songs are versatile, clocking from five minutes to eight making the total album length 52 minutes. Lacrima Mortis doesn't push the boundaries of death/doom metal into another level, but this album is very fresh and interesting listen. The melodies and vocals harmonies are done masterfully and I can warmly recommend this to any doom lover.

January 2012 Best Cut Of The Month

Alcest: Les Voyages De L'Âme

Alcest was introduced to me by a very good friend and I am glad he did. Alcest has been around from 2005 and made its breakthrough with their 2007 debut album Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde. They started with raw black metal, but soon evolved into black metal with strong post-rock and shoegaze influences. As you can tell the lyrics are in French and that is a fresh twist in their music.

The 26 year-old mastermind Neige (Stéphane Paut) does the vocals and plays all the instruments on the album except drums. You could describe their sound as fragile, light and down-toned. The vocals are mainly soft and subdued but Neige does also harsh vocals on only a couple tracks on this album. However, he has stated that on the next album growls will most likely be all gone as he intends to take the music into another direction. Les Voyages De L'Âme is a journey consisting of eight beautifully crafted melodic and moving songs which send you exactly to the fairyland where everything is possible and nothing can harm you.
